I'm Robb Irwin. Whether shooting landscapes, portraits, action or artistic photographs I do it with one thought in mind, “capture the mood, not the scene!” I’ve been shooting since my teens (back in the 1960s) starting out with a Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic 35mm SLR camera. Yes, those were the “film” days where I didn’t have the luxury of shooting hundreds, if not thousands of photographs, then taking them to “post-processing” for editing and eventual selection of the perfect two!!!! But one thing those days taught me was, “you have one moment in time to capture a mood, so be prepared!”
Since my humble beginnings, I did a stint as a photojournalist shooting photographs and writing stories about vacation destinations for the airlines! Not very lucrative, yet I was able to travel extensively and improve my photographic and writing skills at the same time. I then ventured into portrait photography, spending many hours in the darkroom (yes, digital SLRs and post processing make those days look like the dark ages, yet there's something gratifying about doing it the old fashoined way!). I learned lighting, both outdoors and studio and the art of air-brushing to take my subject to the next level. I then ventured into underwater photography and videography doing stories and shooting photos for dive magazines at some of the most remote locations on the planet (what a life!). Lately, I've taken on projects that are more artistic in flavor and are usually shot in the great outdoors.
It's funny, many ask me what equipment I use to capture the "mood". I grab anything at hand, whether its my smartphone, point and shoot, my D810 or my trusty F3 film camera! All have their place. After all...it's the result that matters, not the tool!
